The Pantone color system is a well-known authority on color because it provides accurate communication of color. This is most important in industries where communication about color goes from designer to manufacturer, and from retailer to consumer. This includes the beauty industry where knowing the difference between emerald, turquoise, and aqua sky are part of the profession.
Why does the Pantone color of the year matter in the beauty industry? The “Color of the Year” concept started in 2000 and continues today. It has been an influencer of fashion and beauty since its creation seventeen years ago and it will likely continue as a majorly persuasive tradition. Pantone is such a valuable color matching system that designers and brands have been using them for the selection of perfect colors since the company began in the 1950s.
The color of the year for 2017 was recently announced and it symbolizes a fresh start for the new year. Greenery, or Pantone 15-0343, denotes what the organization hops to see taking place in global culture. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute said, “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”
The color encourages people to get back into nature and in-touch with the “physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world.” So while you may not see people sporting lipstick in this strange but natural hue, it will be a major influence in our industry. What do you predict will happen?
